Marshall Curling: Leagues and Bonspiels at the Red Baron Arena

Curling in Marshall, the regional hub of southwest Minnesota, took off in January 2018, when more than 90 people turned out for an introductory session at the Red Baron Arena and Expo. Instructors from the Glacial Ridge Curling Club in Willmar and USA Curling ice expert Kevin Madsen taught the basics, and eight teams signed up for a new adult league on the spot.

Since then curling has been played on the arena’s Lockwood Motors Rink, with leagues organized through Marshall Community Services on Sunday and Wednesday nights in fall and winter. Teams come from Marshall as well as Slayton and Renville, and newcomers can start at the annual Curling 101 session; about 50 people attended the January 2026 edition, including the Southwest Minnesota State University swimming and diving team.

Marshall staged its first tournament, the Blizzard Bonspiel, in March 2019, when ten teams played through a heavy snowstorm. A second event, Marshall Madness on Ice, followed in March 2020 and drew curlers from as far as Sioux Falls and Cottonwood.
