Frogtown Curling Club: St. Paul’s Irreverent Home of Dedicated Ice

Frogtown Curling Club turned a former Ramsey County hockey rink into one of the busiest curling clubs in the Twin Cities. The club curls in the old Biff Adams Ice Arena on Western Avenue North in St. Paul’s Frogtown neighborhood, and was officially formed in the fall of 2011 with more than 150 charter members. In its first season it became the second dedicated-ice curling club in the Twin Cities.

The building has been renovated nearly every year since, from 2012 to 2016 and again in 2017, when the heated club room doubled in size. The club later expanded to six sheets, and the 20 new team spots filled in seven minutes; the new sheet was nicknamed “Eh” as a nod to Canada. Membership passed 685 for the 2023–24 season, with leagues running six days a week, from a Tuesday daytime fun league to a Sunday night league for new curlers, plus regular Learn to Curl clinics.

Frogtown is known for its social, slightly irreverent culture – round tables in the warming room, shared dishes and opponents broomstacking together. Its bonspiel calendar matches: the Frogtown Bonspiel (since 2012), the Spiel of the Dead, the Polar Spiel, the Aurora Women’s Spiel, the Pride Spiel, the Ice Out Spiel and The Big Spiel.
