Superior Curling Club: Championship Curling at the Head of the Lakes

Superior Curling Club has been curling in Superior, Wisconsin, since 1893, and few clubs in the country can match its record. A blue-collar port town at the head of Lake Superior, Superior turned a sport from Scotland’s elite into a local passion, a story told in the book Curling Superiority! by John M. Gidley. Club curlers have brought home three world championship titles and made four Olympic appearances, and the U.S. Olympic teams of 1988 and 1992 were based in Superior.

The club curls on four sheets of dedicated ice, with a season of about five months and members ranging from kindergartners to curlers in their eighties. Juniors train every Sunday in two age groups, up to age 12 and 12 to 18, and the program’s young curlers include Luke Shuster, son of Olympic gold medalist John Shuster.

Superior also takes curling outdoors: in January 2026 the club staged an exhibition bonspiel for eight teams on Lake Superior ice at Barkers Island, followed by a Learn to Curl event the next day.
