About Morgantown Curling Club
Morgantown Curling Club: West Virginia’s First Curling Club
Morgantown Curling Club is the first and only curling club in West Virginia. It was started by Jeff Ryan, who was inspired by the U.S. men’s gold medal at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics. After a stretch of driving to Pittsburgh to curl, he decided Morgantown needed a club of its own, and founding members included Heather and Kevin Barclay, who had also curled in Pittsburgh.
The club plays on arena ice at the Morgantown Ice Arena in White Park, the city-run rink operated by BOPARC that is also home to the West Virginia Mountaineers hockey team. It curls on three sheets with 48 granite stones from Scotland, sharing ice time with hockey teams and skaters. Ice is available in a limited number of sessions a year, so much of the club’s early work went into teaching. Learn to Curl classes of about an hour and a half cover the basics, with a discount for members, and the club has worked toward forming its own leagues. Interest spiked during the 2022 Beijing Olympics. The club competes as an at-large member of USA Curling.
