About Green Bay Curling Club
Green Bay Curling Club: Stones and Brooms in Titletown Since 1958
Green Bay Curling Club has been part of winter in Titletown since 1958. A lucky mix of people and events got it started: Walter Selck noticed the Brown County Veterans Memorial Arena under construction and saw a venue fit for national curling competition, and on November 21, 1958, ten clubs came to Green Bay for a demonstration that introduced the sport to the city.
In 1960 the club built its own two-sheet house at 781 Potts Avenue, the street now called Mike McCarthy Way. The icehouse was replaced in 1993, adding a third sheet along with maintenance and locker rooms; the clubhouse was torn down and rebuilt in just two and a half months in 2004, and in 2017 the old sand base under the ice gave way to a concrete floor. Membership has grown from about 160 to more than 250 in recent years.
The week is packed: a Monday open league, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon opens, men’s leagues on Tuesday and Wednesday, Thursday women’s, Friday Fun, Sunday mixed and mixed doubles. A Saturday junior program, learn-to-curl sessions and a Try It league bring in newcomers, while weekend bonspiels for men, senior women and mixed teams, plus the Women’s Shamrock Bonspiel, draw rinks from across Wisconsin and the region.
