Owatonna Curling Club: Dedicated Ice at the Steele County Fairgrounds
Owatonna Curling Club has been curling in southern Minnesota since 1968. The club plays at the Steele County Fairgrounds in Owatonna, in a building that serves the county fair in summer and becomes a curling club in winter, with two sheets of dedicated curling ice. As club president Kim Swanson puts it, dedicated ice means the surface can be prepared specifically for curling and kept that way all season.
The club counts about 120 members, from first-season beginners to curlers with decades of experience, drawn from across southeast Minnesota and the Twin Cities. League nights are the heart of the club, and members describe it as much a social hub as a sports venue. Owatonna Youth Curling works alongside the adult club, and local community education has offered Discover Curling classes for newcomers. Members and the youth program have also raised funds to rebuild the off-ice spaces, with plans for a new viewing area, separate locker rooms and a kitchen.
