About St. Joseph Curling Club
St. Joseph Curling Club: Northwest Missouri’s Home for Curling
St. Joseph Curling Club was formed in 2012 by Missouri Western State University and the City of St. Joseph to bring curling to northwest Missouri. The university’s health, physical education and recreation department bought the first stones and brooms, and the club’s opening Learn to Curl sessions that August paired 30 minutes of classroom instruction with an hour on the ice.
More than a decade later the club still plays at Bode Ice Arena on SW Parkway, the city’s municipal rink. Under president Patrick Turner it runs spring and fall leagues of four-player teams, plus public learn-to-curl sessions that have drawn curlers from age 7 to 80. Turner describes the game as easy to learn but hard to master, and members point to the club’s friendly, low-key atmosphere as much as the competition.
